| In 2001 Dr. Scranton went to Hanoi, Vietnam on a fact-finding mission to determine if the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, which he was president of at that time, could come to Vietnam and perform surgery on landmine victims and the disabled. The trip was successful and in June of 2002 he led the first four-surgeon team to Hanoi and to Vinh, Vietnam. There, over a four week period, they operated upon 54 patients. These individuals had amputations from landmine accidents, polio, cerebral palsy, congential deformities, and deformities from untreated trauma. |

| Each year the mission expanded. Each year more children have been operated upon, and a small annual teaching conference grew into 200 Vietnamese coming for a seminar and exchange of ideas - almost half the orthopedic surgeons in Vietnam. To date 257 children and adult patients have received corrective surgery that they otherwise would have been unable to obtain. Over a half million dollars in medical equipment has been donated by various companies to assist the surgeons in this endeavor. This mission will continue well into the future. | |||
